How Much Emergency Fund Do You Really Need?
3 Oct 2026An emergency fund keeps you from borrowing or selling investments when something goes wrong.
How much?
A common guide is 6 months of essential expenses. Use more if your income is irregular, you are the only earner or you have dependents.
| Monthly essential expenses | 3 months | 6 months | 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹30,000 | ₹90,000 | ₹1.8 lakh | ₹3.6 lakh |
| ₹40,000 | ₹1.2 lakh | ₹2.4 lakh | ₹4.8 lakh |
| ₹60,000 | ₹1.8 lakh | ₹3.6 lakh | ₹7.2 lakh |
Essential expenses mean rent or EMIs, food, utilities, insurance premiums and school fees. They do not include holidays or shopping.
Example
With ₹40,000 of expenses, a 6-month target is ₹2.4 lakh. If you already have ₹1 lakh and can add ₹10,000 a month, you reach it in 1 year 2 months. Use the Emergency Fund Calculator.

- Do not touch it for planned spending.
