Step-up SIP: How a 10% Yearly Increase Changes Everything
1 Oct 2026Your salary will probably grow every year. A step-up SIP raises your monthly investment by a fixed percentage as your income grows.
The difference in numbers
Assume ₹10,000 a month, a 12% yearly return and 20 years.
| Plan | Total invested | Estimated value |
|---|---|---|
| Flat SIP of ₹10,000 | ₹24 lakh | ₹99.9 lakh |
| 10% yearly step-up | ₹68.7 lakh | ₹1.99 crore |
The step-up plan invests about 2.9 times as much money and ends with about twice the corpus. It asks you to put in more, but the increase is small each year: ₹11,000 in year 2, ₹12,100 in year 3, and so on.
How to use it
- Pick a step-up that matches your usual salary hike, often 5% to 10%.
- Set it up in your fund platform if it offers a top-up option, or raise the SIP manually every April.
- Do not stretch yourself. A smaller step-up you keep is better than a large one you drop.
